One thing I learned from an interior designer is to keep one color constant in every room of my home. For instance our living room is sage and tan, our kitchen is pink and sage, our bathroom is purple and sage, and our bedroom is red, gold, and sage. That tip has helped me out so much. I know I can buy sage pillows and they can work in the living room for now and I can swap them to the bedroom for a new look later if I want. Colors for candles and nick-nacks can be swapped between rooms as well. I have found that keeping one color constant throughout the house really pulls the house together as a whole which is especially nice in a small dwelling.
I have also learned to use colors to my advantage.
Blue: relaxing and refreshing--gives the image of friendliness and trust and peace-it is a good color for guest rooms and bathrooms.
Green: natural, healthy, rest, comfort, and consistency--good for use throughout the house to provide uniformity, also good for bedrooms, the home art studio or library, and sunrooms.
Red: stimulating color--stimulates feelings and appetites. A great color for a kitchen or master bedroom.
Pink and lavender: gentleness, feminine, weakness, grace, non-aggressive--good color for little girl's rooms, or accents in other rooms
Yellow and orange: Happy, Aggressive, Bold-a good color for the livelier rooms in the house-game rooms, play rooms
Purple: elegance, faith, mystery-a good color for a master bathroom, teenage girl's room, parlor, or accents in a formal dining room
Black: Serious, conservative, modern, slim: Black accents are nice, but will make things look smaller and darker. Good for sinks, modern furniture, or accent peices--too much is often overpwering.
Grey: Balances, blends-a good background color or blending color. A great undistracing color for a home office.
White/Ivory: Bright, clean, pure-a good choice for kitchens and baths to give a clean crisp look. Also a nice accent color in children's rooms and guest rooms.
Browns and Beige: Natural, Friendly, Comforting, Hospitable, Welcoming, Simple, and down to earth. Like Red, it stimulates the appetite. It is a great color for kitchens, dining rooms, and rooms where hospitality is given. It relaxes people and makes them feel at home.
